Afternoon Snack at Oma H.'s
After my wife's father passed away, we brought her mom, Oma H., to live near us in the village. She'd been living out in the countryside, too remote to manage on her own.
Now she's in a tiny but cozy in-law apartment right at the edge of the fields.
And I have to say, this woman can cook. Proper old school German home cooking. Not exactly vegetarian or vegan friendly, much to my wife and daughter's dismay.
At home it's the other way round. My wife and daughter do the cooking there, mostly vegetarian or vegan, and my son and I don't mind at all. Which is probably why we always look forward to a visit to Oma H.'s.
Think Schnitzel, goulash, Römertopf roasts, but also waffles, pancakes, streusel cake. Every single one a win. 🤤

This time it was homemade (what else) potato pancakes, grated potato fried until crispy, served with applesauce on the side, plus a sort of coleslaw.
If you've never had German potato pancakes with applesauce: yes, they really do belong together. This isn’t another scrambled eggs with banana moment. I swear, Alexandra. 😄

I've never really been a fan of potato pancakes. Something about the texture always gets me. But at Oma H.'s, they're actually good.
For dessert she wanted to try something Mediterranean, in her own words: strawberries, Galia melon, feta, olive oil, pepper. Looked great in the photo. Really, really not my cup of tea. 😆
Experimental cooking isn't exactly her strength.
