When Everything Starts Leaking

This week was all about water. Not exactly in the relaxing, summer kind of way.

About a year ago, our home insurance company sent us a leak detection sensor that monitors unusual water consumption. Then, two weeks ago, it reported a possible leak somewhere in the house.

After some back and forth with support, checking valves and searching for obvious problems, one of our toilet cisterns turned out to be the most likely culprit. We shut off the valve and waited. Then we waited some more, as support apparently wasn’t in quite the same hurry as we were.

Eventually, they asked us to shut off the main water supply overnight for six hours so the sensor could recalibrate. After that, the warning disappeared and the leaking toilet was officially declared the likely cause.

I have to admit, the technology itself is impressive. According to support, the sensor can detect extremely small deviations, even something as simple as a slow drip overnight. The sensor gets a thumbs up from me. The support experience, not so much.

The original toilet still hasn’t been repaired yet. Naturally, a second toilet decided this week was the perfect time to join the party and develop problems of its own.

As if that wasn’t enough, temperatures around 34 to 38°C were followed by heavy thunderstorms and hours of rain. Water found its way through a damaged seal on one of our exterior walls and eventually ended up in the basement. Great, another item added to the list. Now we’re waiting for a few dry days before we can properly seal the wall again.

Not everything this week revolved around repairs and buckets, though.

Our youngest celebrated his final week at kindergarten. After the summer holidays, he’ll officially start school. The farewell week included a big celebration and an overnight stay with his friends.

The original plan involved campfire bread, marshmallows, and a night walk. The weather had other ideas. Instead, the teachers improvised and turned the evening into a movie night.

And since you made it this far, here is some more water. This time, at least, it came with a rainbow.

Rain falls in front of a blurred garden scene while a lawn sprinkler creates a soft rainbow across the frame. Trees and greenery fill the background, giving the image a calm, dreamy feel.
